Shame the best RPGs don't get an official english translation. Soma Bringer is one of these.
About the technical side: It's not too much of a graphic monster, but it has its charm. It uses the same technology as PSX Final Fantasy games (3d characters on a 2d background). Its graphics are charming and colorful, nothing more is required for a DS game. EDIT: The game has cel-shaded graphics, although one needs to take a closer look to notice.
The story takes place in a postmodern era, where the world is protected by a barrier, and everything is powered by a mysterious power, Soma. It easily hooks the player to it and has the same setting as many japanese RPGs including Crono Cross.
Where the game stands out sky high, is its gameplay. I don't liked real-time RPGs before I played Soma Bringer, but I instantly realized how good such a system could be. Really, one needs to try it out to fully understand. There's a lot of room for customization, and classes aren't that seperated from one another (I used a spear with my gunner, who can also wield bows). Abilities are being learned like in Blizzard games: there's 4 categories, 4 ranks and 2-4 abilites in one category and one rank.
The style of the game is much more "japanese" than all RPGs available in the US and/or EU. This gives it some more unique charm.
To sum everything up, Soma Bringer is a fun game to play and if you have a flashcard for using the translation patch and/or speak japanese fluently it is definitely worth taking a look. Such gems of playing are rarely made.
