Sonic's 3D blast is a disappointment, though by no means a bad game

User Rating: 7 | Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island SAT
Sonic 3D blast was originally created for the aging megadrive console in 1996, and while not without its critics, it was hailed as one of the games that could show the megadrive's graphical potential. at the same time, Sega had stopped production, due to development problems on Sonic Xtreme, which was to be Sonic first real adventure on the Sega Saturn. to amend for this Sega ported Sonic 3D blast to the Saturn with upgraded graphics and sound.
on the Saturn, the game loses much of its appeal while retaining many of the problems which plagued the MD version.

Story - Dr Robotnik has captured little birds called Flickies and has trapped them inside robots and is out for the chaos emeralds, Sonic is there to save the day.

Gameplay - this is where the game has problems, the game features an isometric camera angle, while Sonic moves in a pseudo 3D world, all this is fine, what hurts the game are the controls. the controls are pretty bad, Sonic moves as though his feet are covered in butter, and the controls feel loose and unresponsive, you can get used to them but it takes time.
a notable mention is that when the Saturn's 3D controller is used, the game is somewhat easier to control but is still somewhat lacking.
the isometric view does have some problems, as it is often difficult to make precise jumps because predicting where you land is frustrating and difficult,

Graphics and Sound - the Saturn version of the game features improved graphics over the MD version and it shows. gone are the flat surfaces and bland colours. the Saturn version has vibrant colours and stages are full of colour and extra detail. CG cutscenes have been added and look pretty good. even better are the special stages, which mimic the special stages from Sonic 2. these are fully polygonal, and look really good. the MIDI soundtrack has been replaced and the new music sounds good fitting the stages well.

In conclusion, Sonic 3D blast is somewhat of a disappointment, as a true 3D sonic would have been better. this is still a good game despite its fairly bad controls. sonic fans should check this game and may like it, the Saturn version is the best version, but the MD version is far more readily available.
