Fun yet forgettable. We don't want or need a Sonic side-game.

Sonic and The Black Knight

What can I say. This isn't the Sonic game everybody wants, but for what it is, its not too bad. Although most people wont mind passing on it due to it not even being part of Sonic's main adventure.

Its set in the world of King Arthur who has become corrupt and evil and Sonic is summoned to destroy him.

You race through the levels using your wii remote to hack and slash the enemies in your way with one of the five swords of the knights of the round table called Caliburn. Unfortunately he is much like Chip from Sonic Unleashed and can be irritating.

Im not blinded by Sonic fandom to realise this isnt a good game. But its also not broken, its simply something we dont want or need in Sonic's universe.

I found if your forgive the occasional sudden stops to defeat enemies with your sword, it can be enjoyable game playing experience. It can be quite satisfying to be speeding along, see a group of enemies ahead, jump into the air and spin with the sword to slash the enemies to ribbons. But it also slows down the gameplay. If your can forgive this you may enjoy the game like I did.

During the game Sonics friends appear as characters representing the knights of the round table and others such as Tails the blacksmith and Amy the lady of the lake from the King Arthur world but they dont recognize you and it makes you feel alone in the game.

It is also quite a short game. There is a world map which opens up to about 8 different locations with about 2 levels in each and most include a bonus level.

So.. after the assumed 15-20 main levels and around 3 boss fights, you will come to the final confrontation between Sonic and King Arthur. The boss fights are primarily a breeze if you use good timing.

Overall I feel satisfied having completed the game but... you dont feel any satisfaction being a Sonic fan for it.

There is all this anger and taunting between Sonic and Arthur but you really cant feel for it because you know its not really Sonic's main story and the whole game is basically a side quest you dont care about.

Overall I must say its enjoyable but pretty forgettable. Get Sonic Unleashed or wait for Project Needlemouse next year.
