I have played many Sonic games but this game is by far one of the best. The levels give you the perfect combo speed and detail so you can choose to go real fast or take your time and explore. Not only that, the game has a time travel feature that is just incredible, so you can explore further in the different times. And as if the level designs weren't good enough, they put in one of the best game soundtracks in history. After playing the game for a while you will be humming along with the music. As far as the American soundtrack and the Japanese soundtrack controversy, I don't know which is better because i haven't played or heard the Japanese version, but it has to be good if it can compete with the American one. The only thing about this game is that if you just play it to beat it you're not going to get the full expeirence. The best way to play is either going for all/most of the time stones or getting all /or most of the good futures. This is my all time favorite game and I think that it was a good idea for them to port it to the cube, but I still prefer to play my original in my Sega CDX.
