This bizarre mix of western RPG, JRPG, and Sonic arcade game doesn't quite work.
Still, I thought this looked cool -- an unusual mix of arcade hero and RPG game company. Even as you play this bizarre game, there are flashes of a Bioware RPG -- dialog choices, fine control over leveling up your characters and their gear, quests, etc. But the game tries much too hard to incorporate "Sonicness" in the form of "action" minigames during combat, and needless pseudo-platforming to collect rings as you wander around. It ruins the RPG, and the action sequences are pretty lame, too easy, and clunky. It's just... clunky and weird.
The good:
* RPG elements are actually pretty cool -- some semi-moral choices, "play your personality of choice" dialog choices, lots of character level-up choices to make
* Fun, Sonic-y musical track
The bad:
* Awkward action sequences and minigame elements during combat that feel tacked-on to the RPG
* Bizarre sound that's loud, low quality, and almost sounds like a GBA pinball game (trying to make it sound like an old-skool action game, I guess)
* Pointless and clunky-to-control platforming as you play to collect items in the game world
Overall, I really, really WANTED to like this game. But ultimately found myself annoyed with the whole package.
