If any game will ever make me feel old, then it's this one right here.
User Rating: 9.6 | Sonic Mega Collection Plus (Greatest Hits) PS2
The first game in the Sonic series, Sonic the Hedgehog, came out on December 31, 1990. Now think about, the game is over 14 years old. It was fun then on the Sega Genesis. Guess what? It's still just as fun now as it was then, maybe even funner, just for the fact that you sit there saying, "Oh yeah! I remember where that thing was now!". Sonic Mega Collections Plus has pretty much any game the hardcore, old-school Sonic fan could want. You have all of the classics, and after playing certain games a certain length of time, other games will unlock. Or if you have a Sonic Heroes save on the same memory card that you are using for Sonic Mega Collections Plus, then two other games will automatically unlock. It all starts out with Sonic the Hedgehog, as the first game in the series. You go through six levels, with 3 acts each. Once you finish the sixth level's last act, it's a one on one showdown with Dr. Robotnik, the game's evil mad scientist who is turning all of Sonic's little animal friends into robots that are out to destroy him. All of this continues as you start Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This game revolutionized Sonic forever. You learn many things in between the Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. First off, Sonic gains the ability called the "Spin Dash". Basically, you old down and then repeatedly start pressing either the X, Square, or Circle Buttons. Sonic will then start spinning in place. Let go of the down button and Sonic will go very fast in a spinning ball. Nothing is able to hurt him in this state unless you run into the spikes, or if you just have bad timing and get smashed by something while trying to get through. Sonic also gains a friend in between the two games. Miles "Tails" Prower teams up with Sonic to try to stop Dr. Robotnik. Two play capabilities were added to the game, so you and a friend could help eachother out. I'll admit, I never was able to finish this game, back in the Genesis days or now. But it is something that I am currently working on. Sonic Spinball is basically a game just there for fun. It actually is a little side story, where you fall off a plane while trying to get in Robotnik's fortress. You must beat four bosses to beat the game. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 once again revolutionized the Sonic series. Now, as a player, Tail is now able to fly you places so that you can get that one extra ring. Knuckles the Enchida is introduced as a new character. But unlike in Sonic 2, he is there to make things worse on you, as he works for Robotnik, which is the exact opposite from Tails. You also can now play in a two player competition. You get to race people in five different zones. The person who wins the most races, wins the the whole caboose. Sonic and Knuckles is a side story from Sonic 3. Only, there is no Tails, and now Knuckles is a playable character. Whether you are playing as Sonic or Knuckles, you will meet up with the other character in the game. This game is much harder than Sonic 3, and I have yet to complete it, too. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is just a fun little game like Tetris, where you have to match up at least four colors in a row to make the beans disappear. Battle through 13 stages and you have won this game. That's Sonic Mega Collections Plus in just a few words. There are some negatives in this game, just like any other. For one, I really wish that all of the games were unlockable from the start. Plus, in a way, I wish some of the nasty glitches that affected the games on the Genesis still wouldn't affect them on my Playstation 2 now. But all in all, the positives outnumber the negatives. Sonic Mega Collections Plus is a must pick-up for any Sonic fan. Even if you never played Sonic in it's old days, you should still really consider picking this game up, as it is only $19.99.
