Sonic Rivals 2 is a game that even most non-sonic fans would have fun with, a true sonic classic

Sonic Rivals sticks close to what made the first game a success with Sonic Fans on the PSP. Its still a classic side scrolling sonic game, but it still uses some 3D tricks. Building on the first game, you have 3 new characters to play with, each with their own special ability. In addition, the game boosts a new mode called battle. The idea of this is to attack your rival, causing him to lose his rings, and when he has no rings, you strike the final blow. This sounds like a great idea, but in reality its less fun. The areas are too big and finding your opponent becomes tiresome, and the fighting system isn't all that fun. It would be much better to if 4 rivals could fight at once, and if they had smaller area, with zoom in and out camera so you could see your opponents at all times.

But of course Rivals 2 redeems itself with super fun side scrolling action. These are basically the same as the first game, where you run as fast as possible through each stage. Only you have an opponent to beat to the end. This is a fresh and highly fun way to play through each stage. The levels aren't overally hard as there's isn't loads of bottom less pits, but they remain fun. Of course its not a simple case of start here, and go here. There are many challenges on each stage. Such as having to complete parts of the level using alternative transport, or by climbing vines.

As you might of guessed, the story isn't so strong. But it does boost the fact that it uses voices, instead of just simple text boxes. You basically play as one of 4 teams and play through each stage as one of the 2, racing your rivals. But say you pick Sonic, you do have to play as Tails for at least one level each stage, where just playing as Sonic himself would be much more fun.

Of course after you complete 8 stories, there is plenty more to do. You can play through each level, having to search for 10 hidden chao, which offers a fun new challenge. Plus there is character cups, which basically gives you 3 levels to play, and if you win the cup you win a card. Speaking of the cards. Throughout the game there are 150 cards to collect as well. Each card has an objective you must complete before you unlock it. Which will keep most Sonic fans occupied for a good while.

Overall Sonic Rivals is a fun game, which successfully expands on the previous title. It will keep Sonic fans happy, especially with the cast of their favourite characters battling each other. Even those who don't follow the series will enjoy this high speed action side scroller.
