I heard about this game and always wanted to play it. I waited so LONG for it to come out on US (I didn't play the arcade version. I couldn't find it anywhere). So, I finally got my hands on it with Sonic Gems Collection. This is a great game for Sonic and fighter fans alike! Storyline: Dr. Robotnik is at it once again... and this time he's after the 8 Chaos Emeralds (yes. Eight. In this game, there are 8 emeralds. But that is probably because there are 8 battles (excluding the battle with Metal Sonic and Dr. Robotnik) in this game)and he must get them from the 8 guardians. Play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Espio the Chameleon, Bark the Polarbear, Nack the Weasel aka Fang the Sniper , and Bean the Dynamite to get the Chaos Emeralds in time before the evil Robotnik gets them first. Hmmm... pretty good for an arcade title. Graphics- They look pretty good. But the character model's polygons look extremely low. Enviornments look great though. Gameplay- Quite simple: SMACK. SMACK. SMACK. SMACK. WHACK!!! *ahem*... but it is really fun to do! Especially when it comes to button mashing (I am a bit of a button masher when it comes to fighting games...). The characters have different commands. Punching, spinning, throwing bombs, shooting bullets, and hammering down furries. The controls are rather simple to button mashers. A to punch, Y to kick, X to do a Big Smash Attack (I think), and B to summon barriers. Continuosly pressing to A or Y (or maybe X I think) will allow the charactters to do a punching, hammer, or shooting combinations that will do a big set of damage put together. Special abilities are also present in this. For an example: down A attacks. Sonic does a Spin Dash (so does Tails and Knuckles... well I'm not 100% on Knuckles) and Espio spin himself (resembling that of a tornado. It looks cool). These do a great set of damage but it has a range. So, I reccomend timing it. So I'll talk about my opinion on the characters. Starting with my favorite: Sonic the Hedgehog! Sonic: Sonic plays quite well and has the fastest attacks. His attacks are quite strong (not as strong as Knuckles and Bark but it's just so easier to use Sonic. Especially when it comes to button mashing!!!!). My favorite attacka would be his Spin Dash attacks. AS they are just sooo speedy!! I My only complaint of him would be if his attacls could use some tuning. Some of them are hard to perform. But hey it is fun. Bean the Dynamite: He was hard at first in story mode but it got easier. Boy he is cheap. And very strong. Especially when it comes to rapid fire. His bomb attacks work quite well. Knuckles the Echidna: Packs a powerful punch but he is too easy to defeat. I think he should a bit more durable.. as I died with him a bunch of times! Miles "Tails" Prower: Pretty sweet. His grapple move is good I guess. Amy Rose: I don't like her that much. She feels so uncomfortable to use. I don't like that she keeps randomly using barriers in Aracde mode. Bark the Polarbear: Strong but slow. Meh, understandable. Espio the Chameleon: Good. Not much to complain her other than the fact his atttacks are hard to perform. Too many buttons to presa! This is my complaint about all characters. Fang the Sniper: Uses his gun to attack. My least favorite character out of all of the characters. His gunplay is pretty weak. It is too easy to dodge. And I don't like the fact that he shoots guns all the time. His gunplay could use some tuning. At times, this game can be hard (especially at the fight with Metal Sonic) It does get harder as you complete a battle. But I like a challenges. Still, it can get too hard though. It could a bit easier. But I'm just complaining. Sound: The music and sound effects are pretty good. Well, decent to be more precise. But it is good. It isn't putting special input on me though. Overall: If you like Sonic, fighting, and challenges Sonic Championship is the game for you. Despite the flaws, a great fighting game.
