An underrated game that still could have been better.
This game is titled simply Sonic the Hedgehog, which the same name as the first ever Sonic game. Why couldn't have been something different than the same name as the first game? Oh well. Perhaps this title was being used to celebrate Sonic's 15th Anniversary.
Now, I've heard a lot of complaints about the glitches. Yes, those are annoying. There's parts in the game where you're on snow levels, where your character sometimes won't snowboard, even with the huge snowball chasing them, which is frustrating. There's also parts where if you're Knuckles, Rouge or Blaze, that they sometimes get stuck to the wall when gliding to it. Trying to jump off doesn't work. It's like you have to be at a specific area to jump. The good thing about these stages is that you won't have to search for treasures or anything this time. Looking past the glitches though, the gameplay isn't that bad. At it's core, it resembles the Sonic Adventure games in gameplay more than anything. There's also this other stage where you run extra fast with some tornado or something chasing you. In that part, it can be quite easy to fall to your death, even if it doesn't look like it. There's also some parts where it's hard to control the character, like in this part near the beginning of the game where Sonic is surfing on water. It's not a big deal, but there's rings there and it's hard to grab them.
The game could have also done without the hub world missions and stuff. Not to mention, it the load screens and how long they are. That's annoying. I've also heard complaints about the camera, but I don't think they're really that bad. But still, it would have been nice if you could get the camera to stay behind the character.
This game does have some pretty interesting things to it. For example, the new character, Silver. I actually like him. Unlike Sonic and Shadow, he is not a fast character. Instead, he uses telekinetic and can carry objects and throw them at enemies and he can even throw enemies themselves at other enemies. It's pretty cool. Except, Silver's levels can be a bit too long. The boss fights are also nice. They are more in-depth than they are in most Sonic games too.
Overall, this game is not so bad, but not so great either. This is actually one of the most hated Sonic games and I don't agree with it being one of the worst Sonic games. There's better 3D Sonic games out there though.
