Written reviews will not do this game justice

User Rating: 7 | Soul Sacrifice VITA

It's one of those games where you seem to have very basic gameplay and other mechanics, but there's just enough of everything to make the game fun.

First of all, I think this game is great, but text reviews on positive features will not do it justice. Do not read reviews about the "good" stuff in the game - watch a video: it will do the game more justice and it will show you the great details that pulled me in so fast (which are close to impossible to summarize in short paragraph).

I'll I am going to say about what the game has to offer is:

  • It's an action combat game, with well implemented risk/resource management and somewhat unique take on character progression.
  • For once, a game with a story I can enjoy. It's not one of those games that will scream "That guy is EEEEEEVIL!" before forcing you on a journey for some idealistic reason. The story sort of implies that a certain character is evil, but most of the time instead of outright stating it, it presents you with some "unbiased" memories or stories and lets you judge the characters you face.

Anyways, I'll only list a few things that are not so great and drop my personal rating for this game from maybe 9/10 to 7/10:

  • Hub based game: You're sitting in a cell and going on missions by reading a book. It works in terms of lore, but hub based games will never get a perfect score from me, unless they are purely competitive online games.
  • Followers are bad: At the beginning most followers only have a few useless skills, making the followers useless. You can do missions with them to unlock more skills (by the way you won't know which skills they get until they get them) and make them more useful, but they still seem stupid.....It's hard to explain in words, but I think my followers are suicidal...
  • Followers who won't shut up: "I AM ABOUT TO DIE........BUT IT'S OK, I CAN TAKE PAIN!" in an almost infinite loop at some bosses.
  • A little grindy: The way skills, followers, "Equipment" and other things work in game you will have to redo stages over and over again to upgrade, unlock or alter different things in game. I don't mind playing stuff over and over again, but to give you 1 example: a lot of followers have horrible skill sets and you won't know about it until you unlock them. If you get one of the bad followers, you pretty much have to play some content again to improve another follower and see his/her skills.
  • Dark Arm feels superior to Divine: This may be debatable, because you kinda need to mix the levels in game. My problem is with the fact that Divine arm (health) is simply not as rewarding as Dark Arm.
