Better than SC2, but not the impact that SC was.

User Rating: 8.4 | SoulCalibur III PS2
First off, the gameplay. This game feels very similar to SC2. The returning characters do feature some tweaks to their command list, but otherwise, they feel exactly the same. The game does offer a variety of new modes like chronicles of the sword, tales of the souls and soul arena. Chronicles of the sword is basically a very simple turn-based strategy game that follows your character as a backstory. The graphics in this mode aren't great, but it can be fun if you have the patience. Tales of the souls is basically a backstory to whatever character you pick. The problem with this mode is it can quickly become frustrating because you can't change the difficulty. Soul arena is a mode where fight other warriors in various conditions. The game also adds a create-a-warrior mode where you create your own character. The only problem with this mode is that you have to unlock a majority of the items in order to create a character that is truly your own.

The graphics in the game remain relatively the same as in the last game. The character models do look a bit sharper and the backgrounds do have more detail. There are also some very impressive lighting effects found on some of the stages.

The sound also remains relatively impressive due to the inclusion of music from SC, SC2, and new music made specifically for this game. Some of the returning characters due feature new voice work. This is awkward at first, but you quickly grow use to it.

This game has a lot of extras and movies to unlock. A dedicated gamer could probably unlock everything in about two weeks. It's disapointing that Namco couldn't include online play. This is by far the most disapointing thing about this game.

Overall, the new modes and characters, as well as the unlockables, are enough to satisfy any fan of the series. The game may not have online play or the impact that SC had, but it's still a darn good fighting game.
