The ever so popular Spawn once again comes to your home console in another one of his games. The Spawn franchise now has some what of a reputation for releasing poor and mediocre games. The last game for Dreamcast, Spawn: In the Demon’s Hand, was an improvement to the horrible PlayStation game. It was a third person shooter, that used fighting game elements, and was made by Capcom. It wasn’t the greatest game, but it was heading towards a better direction then the PS game. Now, Namco has taken a shot at making a Spawn game. It’s very different from Capcom’s game, in which it loses all multiplayer aspects, and has gone into a completely single-player action game. The story isn’t that indulging. Pretty much, the Angels have made a weapon to destroy hell. It shoots a beam straight towards hell, and they are trying to take it out in one shot. The weapon is powered by necroplasm, and that’s what Spawn is made of. So they want him. Also, hell is after Spawn because they want him to command their army. So Spawn is caught in the middle of heaven/hell, is trying to protect the people, and trying to save himself all at once before heaven and hell create the Armageddon. Not that great of a story, but oh well. Spawn: Armageddon can be compared to be very similar to Capcom’s popular Devil May Cry series. You have your basic melee attack, guns, and necroplasm meter that’s very similar to the devil meter in DMC and it’s used to do various spells. Spawn has only one melee weapon, which is his axe that’s formed by his cape. It can not be upgraded, and he only knows two combos and one forward lunging attack. His guns on the other hand, can be upgraded to carry more ammo, and yes, you have an ammo limit unlike DMC. If you ever do run out of ammo, you can use your trusty chains for long distance attacks. These chains can also be used to pull you up to higher places, but only if there is an icon there. Your chains will then grab this icon and pull you up. Spawn can also double jump, and glide with his cape. This can be useful to go across long, bottomless pits. Although, the handling of double jump with gliding is not that controllable. It’s fairly easy to go straight forward, but not as easy to go in a curve or double jump towards a different direction. He “can” wall jump, but only when you are in an extremely small alley and you jump from wall to wall. These alleys are not commonly found in the game, and you are unable to wall jump off any other wall. The graphics are not the greatest you will find in a game, yet they don’t aren’t exactly abysmal. Spawn himself looks similar to how he looks in Xbox’s Soul Calibur 2, except a little watered down looking because the engine of this game is not as strong as the engine of Soul Calibur 2. The enemies look quite ugly and unimpressive. A lot of the textures of the bigger bosses and the environments look quite ugly as well. None of the characters that talk during the cut scenes have any lip syncing at all. Unlike DMC, the camera in this game at default, behind spawn, and is controllable. But there is no button to auto center the camera, and you might find yourself re-adjusting the camera during a fight because the camera might get stuck behind a wall every now and then. The sound is overall pretty good. The voices during the cut scenes are voiced by the same voice actors from the HBO cartoon, which is a plus to any Spawn fans who’ve watched these cartoons. The music is “ok” though. The music is nothing exciting, yet nothing annoying. The sound effects become very repetitive and annoying though. There aren’t many impact noises, especially for the chains. The replay value of this game is quite low. There are useless hidden items, such as comic book cover art, that adds no value to the game and it gives you such a small view of the picture itself, instead of a full screen view. There are a few easy puzzles in this game, very simple and very little platform adventuring, and an extremely repetitive combat system. Overall, if you have gamers who have played Devil May Cry or even own this game, will find little enjoyment in this game at all. It’s very apparent that this game tried to be a carbon copy of a good game, and failed to do so. Spawn fans might find the game enjoyable to play as Spawn for a few missions, but they will soon find it repetitive as everyone else will. The only plus side in getting this game, is for fans to add this game into their Spawn collection. Otherwise, you wont find much in this game.
