The story does not keep this from still being a terrible game.
The game has an interesting plot that breaks the fourth wall and asks the player, "why are you enjoying this game?". That question would be more meaningful if the game were the slightest bit enjoyable. I was too busy worrying about clunky controls, bad teammate AI, and hordes of enemies who aren't afraid to spawn right on top of you. Any meaning in the game is greatly diminished. I wouldn't expect most players to stick with it long enough to even get to see the story, let alone have it make any impact.
