“Speed Racer” was a very fun, albeit far too short, racing game starring Speed Racer and his fantastic Mach 5. Of course Speed’s rogue’s gallery also made appearances. The Shooting Star (Racer X’s car), the Gang of Assassins, the Car Acrobatic Team, Melange, and the GRX all race against the Mach 5, and were playable vehicles after being beaten.

Once the GRX was obtained, the game stopped being fair. The speed and handling of that golden car allowed the player to blow away the competition and win with more than ample time to spare.

No videogame featuring the Mach 5 would be complete without the trademarked gadgets, and “Speed Racer” on the PS1 did not disappoint. The jacks which allowed the Mach 5 to jump, the rotary saws which laid waste to any obstacle in the Mach 5’s path, the transparent cover which allowed underwater travel, and the special grip tires, which allowed the Mach 5 to drive off-road were all utilized in the videogame as a means of creating shortcuts along the race course. My only complaint with “Speed Racer” was that it was too short, many more races could have been added, and the tracks could have been longer and more challenging.
