Spider-Man 2 is definitely one of the best Spider-Man titles out there, even though it contains a few flaws.

Spider-Man 2 is one of the best Spider-Man titles. The game sticks to some parts of the movie and adds a little more to it just to make it longer, which isn’t necessarily bad since you get to see other classic Spider-Man characters. What makes Spider-Man 2 worth playing is the web swinging aspect of the game. Unlike previous Spider-Man games, in Spider-Man 2 players are in control of how Spider-Man swings through New York. The game allows you to choose how long Spider-Man stays on a web line, how fast you can go, and at which point in the swing arc you want to let go at. In between web swings, players can pull off acrobatic stunts in the air to earn points. These points will allow you to buy not only acrobatic moves but also web swinging and combat upgrades as well.

Now web swinging wouldn’t be much fun if gamers were only allowed to swing in a specific area like in other Spider-Man games. In Spider-Man 2, players can take Spider-Man through out most of Manhattan, even to the Statue of Liberty. If swinging around the city gets a little boring after a while, the game gives players races to complete to earn more points. Web swinging upgrades become especially handy when you move onto more difficult races and require more speed to finish them. Some of these races can be very frustrating to do and some might just skip those races all together.

Another cool feature of the game is that Spidey can actually go to ground level and interact with the citizens. This is probably one of the game’s strongest and weakest points. When not doing any story missions, players can web swing through the city help out citizens in danger. This can get annoying after a while as players will often find themselves in the same scenario dozens of times. Completing a certain amount of these side missions will earn you titles that don’t really serve much purpose other than just prove you did those types of missions that amount of times. Besides helping out citizens, players can also do some missions for the Daily Bugle, the pizza restaurant Peter works at, and meet Mary Jane for a date. For all of these missions, players are given a certain amount of time in which to complete them, and they more difficult as they progress.

The story mode missions of the game are fairly easy and fun to do. These missions are divided into chapters, each of which requires players to complete a certain number of goals. I would’ve liked to see more stealth involved like in the first Spider-Man movie game and the Spider-Man game for Playstation back in 2000. Some of the missions will take some skill and thinking but will probably take only a few tries to complete.

With the exception for a few cut scenes, some of the characters aren’t that great to look at. The environment, on the other hand, looks great and is definitely something to appreciate. The animation in the game is done very well and most of the actors do a decent voice over. Even thought this game has its flaws, Spider-Man 2 is still a fun game. Being a Spider-Man fan myself, I highly recommend that fans of Spider-Man get this game. Even if you aren’t a fan of Spider-Man, this game is definitely worth trying out.
