After playing the game for 9 straight years I can finally write a review about it. This challenging game is wellworth it
You control two legendary Marvel characters, Spider-Man and Venom to stop his madness. The game's story follows EXTREMELY close to the Maximum Carnage comics which was 14 issues long. It's quite simple, supervillian is out to destroy a major city and superheroes must stop them before it's to late. The game is very challenging, even for a hardcore gamer due to the beat-em-up style format. The whole game is just not your average simple-beat-the-game-in-one-day-game and your lucky that Spider-Man and Venom picked up some allies along the way.
The game tries to offer a variety of levels like, beat-em-up, climbs, boss-fights and one hidden mini-game during the cinemas. But overall, it's mostly just beat-em-up, not that it's a bad thing because this is where the game strives on. You start out on easier enemies then as you progress you see more powerful enemies, from Trenchcoat guys to Citizens with guns. Perhaps one of the most annoying enemies in the game are the Fantastic 4's robots. They are so fast that they can surrond you and totaly destroy your health bar. But one of the weirdest are the biker babes, since their long hair are so hard that they can knock Venom off of their feet. They must've... used a lot of hairspray.
The boss-fights are simple when you battle ordinary humans but when it comes to supervillian boss fights and all boss fights are double team, mind you, can be frustratingly difficult. Doppleganger is the easiest of bosses but Demogoblin is the frustrating of all but nothing compared to the final fight with Carnage.
Spider-Man's missions are difficult but Venom's are easier since his attacks are slightly stronger then Spidey's. Though, if you succesfully access the hidden Venom level you'll cut the game's level total from 20 to just only 17 levels making your life much more easier. Trust me, I've been playing this game for nine years now.
The graphics are just superb for a game made late in the Genesis' last year among the detailings and animations. Especially the controls couldn't be any better as it is just pure and simple.
Featuring the now defunct band "Green Jelly" headlining the game's main theme, level and cinema songs. The main theme is extremely catchy and the name of the song though is called "Carnage Rules." Though the band only made one album but this was their only big hit. They offered a great variety of songs but was often repeated throughout the levels over and over again.
Overall, the game's difficulty requires you to take advantage of EVERY power-ups, secret rooms and hero icons found in the game or you'll never beat the game. This game will make you keep coming back for more since it will show you no mercy.
