House of Gore

This is the first in the famous but underrated survival horror franchise "Splatterhouse" and after all these years it's still a bloody good time. This adaptation of the arcade game I think is great even though may'be not 100% perfect due to the system's hardware limitations which has caused some graphical decorations to become missing. But despite that fact it didn't make the game less fun because most to all of what made the arcade game is still intact, as most good/great conversions should.

The franshise is one that is pratically made for fans of the horror genere, even if your not a fan of that genere you can still appreciate. It was also one of the first steps in the survival horror video game genere, and Rick (the good Jason) to me is not just one of the first video game heroes in that genere but one of my favorate pulp horror heroes up there with "Blade", "Angel", and Ash from the "Evil Dead Trilogy", he is one of the heroes that have made evil haul butt.

The Graphics are very good they really show and capture the feel of being in a horror movie enviorment. Though the best thing about them was always seeing the splatter effects and the blood on each of the opponents you beat the crap out of without or with weapons which are your best friend in this game. You hit opponents with a 2 by 4 much like Adam Sandler in "Happy Gilmore" hits a golf ball it's a great feeling. The controls on the action are simple and soild. The pace is slightly fast and the difficulty really isn't that hard but not that easy there are a few tricky spots, though I can get though them with no problems once you figure it out. The boss battles are fun and actually easy if you can believe that.

The music is very good has that moody feel to them and adds to the dark atmosphere of the game, some tracks are memorable and you can find remixs of them online, though personally I like the music in the sequels even more but that's just me.

It also pays homages to lots of horror movies you may or may not know. Like the main protagonist obviously to horror villian Jason Vorhees in the "Friday the 13th franchise" or even the Level 3 boss with the burlap sack homages to the first mask Jason wore in "Friday the 13th part 2" or even to the Phantom Killer in the horror movie "The Town that Dreaded Sundown". The icky worms you fight homages to "The Deadly Spawn"; heck just simply the fact you go though the whole haunted house is a big homage to any haunted house movie you can think of like "House", "Poltergeist", the japanize horror film "Housu", etc.

So enter the "Splatterhouse" if you dare.
