Good not-so-friendly violent fun!

Let me start off by saying this game is fun...repetitive but fun....full of over the top gore, you will see blood be shed, organs fly, arms and heads ripped off, all the reason this is called "SPLATTERHOUSE" weak stomachs beware. I was a fan of the originals...call them CULT CLASSICS if you may you either hate or love them and I see that happening with this game as well....you'll either hate or love it. The gameplay is your basic brawler/beat em up style 3rd person with some interesting side scroller action thrown in to pay homage to the days of old...but my complaint here is on the side scrolling parts the controls become a bit wonky and Rick the big hulking lug that he is handles just as and often finds the bottomless pits a better place to die than by the hands of the game's many nasty beasties who will be ripping your limbs off and giving you headaches much of the time....Rick can die pretty swiftly if you don't pay attention to your health and if you're not careful so be forewarned. Not to mention the boss battles for the most part are pretty memorable and the return of the dual chainsaw wielding behemoth from the original is one of my faves, a lot of "God of War" and "Mad World" style as somebody aforementioned gameplay to be found throughout with a good copious amount of it's own thrown in. The graphics are pretty good. They have those cell shaded, cartoonish look to them and the blood and chunks look great....some of the animations are good and some look a little stiff but all and all it's pretty believable....Rick is a big muscle bound ogre so he moves around like one...the load scenes are probably the best looking part of the game and remind me of when you get bested in "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and get to go face to face with the bad guys...black background and the monsters up close and personal....I noticed a few technical flaws as well but nothing that really derives from anything...they all seemed to happen at the load screens and not during game play. The sound effects and voice acting are one of the strong points....the splats and squishes never get old and the soundtrack is very fitting and will offer something to metalheads such as myself to get excited about with artists such as "Lamb of God, Goatwhore, The Haunted, Cavalera Conspiracy, Terrorizer, and Five Finger Death Punch"...it's a brutal soundtrack to a brutal game. The voice acting is also quite admirable and actors such as "Jim Cummings" of the "Darkwing Duck" and "Tigger" (just to name a few) fame have made great contributions and to hear him play the "Terror Mask" is memorable and downright hilarious at times....just imagine a pissed off DW yelling smart ass remarks and sexual innuendo and giving you the urge to kill and you have the "Terror Mask's" voice over 100%...."I'm the TERROR MASK that flaps in the night!!!" Heh sorry had to do that. Cummings really breathes life into the mask in a way even "Mark Hammill" couldn't have done better. The voice acting is a major strong point in this game and probably some of the best voice over work done in a game in a good while! "Splatterhouse" also has great presentation and some good unlockables...the *ORIGINAL* 1988 arcade classic ...and the 2 Genesis ports of 2 and 3 make this a pretty good package....not to mention an arena style gauntlet to play through. The game is not terribly long the story is about 8 hours I'm guessing if even but there's a few reasons to go back through like provocative pics of Rick's hot main squeeze Jennifer (how such a dorky guy got such a hot babe is beyond me) ...overall "Splatterhouse" is a guilty pleasure that may only appeal to certain people...probably metalheads being the main audience but I did find a lot of fun to be had here and some nostalgia revisited all and all a worth while time at least for this guy. Fans of the series will be delighted, while liberals and those weak to violence will be horrified....go cry to momma.
