A very light-stress, entertaining game for the short time that it lasts.
It starts out by introducing the dragons and their "realm" and then introducing the main enemy of the game, Gnasty Gnorc. The introduction is one of the only times where the player will hear a joke throughout the whole game, which is kind of a disappointment as the game has such a light mood to it.
There are only three basic moves to use: "flame", which is a short, small area of fire-breathing, charge, which is running really fast with Spyro's horns pointed forward, and glide, which can be used to reach certain areas. Most enemies only take one hit to kill and the bosses only take as much as three hits to kill. There is some strategy to the game with certain enemies that can only be killed by being "flamed," certain enemies that can only be charged into, and a few enemies, usually bosses, that need to be defeated with a combination of the two.
The graphics, I'm sure, were very nice for their time and, though they are definitely not the best I've ever seen, they create a very pleasant look similar to "Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy" inasmuch as it is very simple and doesn't try too hard for a look that depresses a person in its complexity. Because of this there are no long, annoying load screens. Most of the load screens are between levels and worlds and they are masked by the gem accumulation screen where the game takes the gems the player earned in the area they were just in and putting them in the total.
The game progresses from world to world by means of goals such as earning a total of 6000 gems. The fact that the player doesn't have to face every boss and in fact, theoretically, could go through the whole game without facing any boss, at least until the end, is very comforting.
The sound effects in-game are very satisfying, the voice acting is very well done and often present and the music is very fitting for this light-mood game.
The main aspect of the game is collecting. It is because of this that the overall game is very light-stress and playable almost any time. A very good choice for any Playstation owner. The only problems I can muster up against this game are that you can drown in even the shallowest of water and the final boss was a very large annoyance to me. I am glad to have played this game and will probably play it much more.
