While not realistic, SSX 3 is the most entertaining snowboarding game out there. The game play is very natural… anyone can pick it up a few minutes. We’ve taken SSX and SSX 3 to a few ski area bars in Colorado (Wolf Creek, Crested Butte, and Monarch) and everyone digs it. Just for playability (even after a few beers) SSX is the way to go. If you’re looking for realism go with Amped (far more realistic but not as much fun). You begin the game with a pass to one of three mountains. By earning medals and completing challenges on the first mountain, you’ll open the second and so on. I would describe the game as quazi-linear… while you can explore the entire mountain, you’ll be sticking to the runs. The courses are huge and on not quite as linear (mainly on Peak 3) as the original SSX. It will take a few attempts to figure out the best way down each course. The drops and “UBER” tricks are completely impossible, but hey, you want to ride like you’re in a Warren Miller reel, not the beginner slope. The graphics are incredible: the mountain scenery is well rendered and I rarely experience a frame rate problem. The customizable DJ style music is a nice touch (no lame, repetitive soundtrack). The only things I would change about the game would be to make it complexly non-linear… letting you go out-of-bounds into the trees and explore the whole mountain like you might do in real life. Put a few patrollers out there to chase you if you speed through a “slow zone” by the lodge… if your caught you’re busted back to the first mountain.
