Not revolutionary, but still...
All that said this game doesn't deserve what gamepot gave it as a 6.0; it's better than that. I wouldn't give it a 10 either, but it's still fun. Every rpg doesn't have to be a FF7. This old school rpg doesn't offer anything new to the genre, but it doesn't tank in it either. It floats towards the top but doesn't quite make it. But it serves it's purpose: it introduces the world(s) of star ocean and sets up what type of rpg the series will be while offering a fun but mediocre story (but it will suprise you at times). It contains the same types of conventions the others have: multiple recruitable characters (but recruiting some will elimate the others), item creation, and being able to travel to different planets (although in this one it is a matter of choice).
Although this game doesn't blow away the competition or even the following games to come, it's still fun and I recommend it to any fan of rpgs or the series.
