The original Star Wars: Battlefront, to me was a bit of a boring game. It was easy everywhere, except multiplayer. There weren't oodles of maps, there was no storyline, or even much single player action to be had at all. It was somewhat innovative in it's gameplay, with the massive army reserves and control points, but that was the only way to play the game. It wasn't a bad game, but I was certainly not as impressed as I thought I would be with the 'Bestselling Star Wars game ever', beating out such powerhouses as Rogue Leader, Knights Of The Old Republic and the like. Thus, when I picked up this sequel, I was expecting very little. I'm glad I was. The changes made to this game were *exactly* what needed to be changed. There's a storyline. There's depth to the Galatic Conquest singleplayer action, where strategy actually plays a role as you battle for supremacy across the galaxy, not just with your troops, but also with your fleets, making decisions on where to move, how to boost your army with your victory credits, etc. The awkward controls for the starfighters in the original was always something that bugged me. They handled like cars that didn't like gravity. In Battlefront 2, the space combat is by far my favourite scenario. The fighters handle like a dream, performing intricate maneuvers with just a few buttons. There are also a good deal more vehicles, both in space and on the ground. The space combat is incredibly fun, with multiplayer options ranging from capture the flag to an assault format that sees you in a race to knock out the vital systems of your opponent's capital class cruiser, either in a small strike force landing inside their hanger, or by bombing along the hull. Instead of the heroes being the almighty gods of the game, like in the original, barely being able to be touched, wandering aimlessly, either doing nothing, or hacking down insane numbers of troops, you can now control the hero, if you choose to have one appear. They're incredibly powerful, yes, but not impossible to take out, by any means. There is even a map where players can each pick a hero and duke it out in the streets of Mos Eisley. The soldiers now have exhaustion bars, which go down when you run or roll, making sure players can't simply roll around constantly, while at the same time adding more options for doding (you can now roll forwards and run, where you couldn't in the original). Those these changes can be cited as being 'incremental', there was hardly any better way for the makers to change the original. Every major mistake was fixed and even the good points were brushed up and made just a little more sleek. It's still very easy in singleplayer, once you have played the game for a while (although the storyline is much more difficult than other singleplayer options, luckily). Battlefront 2 took an alright game, picked it up, brushed it off and delivered an unbelieveable sequel. I haven't this much fun with a shooter in a very long time.
