One of the best Star Wars RTS games available.
Many companies have made attempts at Star Wars themed RTS games over the years (Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, and Force Commander to name two), with varying success. Force Commander, for instance, had all the proper units, etc. but lacked imagination and solidity of gameplay. Riddled with bugs, poor pathing, etc. it made for a horribly unsatasifying experience. Galactic Battlegrounds, on the other hand was very well made in many ways. The gameplay was solid, and the player got to experience many classic units from the various major factions from the movies. However, it was also an Age of Empires II clone (made by the same company in fact) and the game's factions were virtually identical save for the unit models.
This game breaths some fresh life into the Star Wars RTS genre, and does it with some great style.
Regardless of whether you choose to play a full campaign or just a skirmish type mode, you ill experience combat on either the ground or the space level, featuring all the classic units from the movies that you always wanted to play as. The fact that these are present is one of the coolest things about the game, as commanding a fleet of Star Destroyers becomes a reality.
Here in 2010, the graphics are slightly dated, but unless you zoom in ultra close, it doesn't detract at all from the gameplay.
There's nothing hugely innovative about the actual gameplay as far as unit selection, controls, abilities, etc. but that also doesn't really detract from the experience.
Both the Rebel and the Empire campaigns are worth playing through, as they each feature unique ways of advancing the campaign and the storyline. The are both set around Ep. IV, and leave the fate of the story in the hands of the player.
The only real diversion from your standard RTS fare is that fact that resources are only handled outside of battles, on a Galactic level, and the only units available to you are those that you take into battle (With the exception of planets with structures that produce units for you during the battle until destroyed). On that level, it very heavily resembles Risk or Axis and Allies.
It is not, if you were to take away the Star Wars elements, the most impressive or noteworthy of RTS games, but for those that are even mildly into the genre, or the Star Wars lore, it is without a doubt, a very good representation of both.
