The new SWG is a travesty of game design. Its not fun, not an RPG, not a good MMOG and a terrible FPS.
They turned SWG into a cardboard, cutout first person shooter/MMOG mix in the vein of World of Warcraft meets Star Wars Battefront. And the results were terrible.
Star Wars Galaxies, in the early days, was the single most creative MMORPG I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It had its problems, granted, but nothing like the problems I see today. While newer pure combat MMOGs are quite fun in their own right, no game had the tools to allow players to create a world quite like SWG. The gamers can have their GW, WoW and so forth, but for those people with half an imagination and the desire to live in another world (rather than simply shoot blast-ended skrewts for nine hours), SWG was king. It attracted non-traditional players to the world adding a dimension never before seen in the limited perceptions of us gamers...
I have tried to get my wife and several friends back into MMOGs thanks to the fun times we had in the early days of SWG. I can't do it. No MMOG has a more detailed crafting system, no MMOG has an entertainer profession, no MMOG has quite the social life, no MMOG has non-combat options for gameplay, no MMOG has decent player cities, no MMOG has wide open spaces for exploration, no MMOG has such rich player content or the props for said content, no MMOG has such interesting character (appearance) design options, no MMOG has such a wide range of character personality props such as clothing and image design. No MMOG has the depth or character of SWG.
I hate to use harsh language... but the new SWG is an abomination. There are two things wrong with the new SWG: 1) you've transformed a great RPG into an FPS and 2) you've implemented a system so hastily that it is unpolished and not-fun.
