A deeply flawed game, a shadow of what it was

User Rating: 2 | Star Wars Galaxies: Starter Kit PC
The developers claim the new version of Star Wars Galaxies is "fast-paced" and full of "action". In truth the new interface is clumsy and clunky. Just getting yourself around is a chore, let along actually fighting or otherwise interacting with anything.

In reducing Jedi to a starter profession, all professions have been levelled, and Jedi is no longer anything special. The four kinds of Trader, which are supposed to replace all the previous kinds of Craftsmen, are flawed as well by their arbitrary and mandatory divisions, and the lack of flexibility in allowing crafters to select their own combinations. In addition, the concentration on Jedi and looted items and gifts more or less makes Traders superfluous.

What was a relatively sophisticated online game that relied on the interaction of many different kinds of players has been dumbed down into a poor copy of many other games. Star Wars deserves better than this, the only Star Wars online game. It would have been better if Sony Online Entertainment had retained the earlier game as an "advanced" version, and created this as an introduction. Star Wars is big enough to have two online games.

That said, the tutorial is lots of fun and it is a shame players can't just visit it any time.
