BEWARE: Game glitches. A lot of stuff to do, no motivation to do it. Boring missions.
I played the trial first. I kinda liked what I saw. So I bought it for 15 bucks from the appropriate web page. I figured 15 bucks was cheap so why not give the full version a try. Well, as much as I'd like to say this game was good, I can't. It has good ideas, but they're not done right. Obviously a lot of time and money went into this game, and you must respect the fact that the makers try very hard to appease their customers' wishes. But it is all done for nothing, in my opinion.
I am a huge fan of Star Wars, have been since episodes 4, 5, and 6 came out. But this game is not how an MMORPG based on Star Wars could be, or should be. Here's some issues about the game:
1. Game Glitches. Every 20-30 seconds or less, the game glitches. I will be running, and then the game freezes for a few seconds. Also, I'll be fighting an enemy, or initiating a battle with an enemy, and the game freezes. The next thing I know it's already dead.
2. Substance. The story line is rather weak (as well as misplaced and incorrect according to the movies, which is okay because it's only a video game based off the movies). The missions are weak. There is nothing in this game that makes me want to keep on playing. It lacks substance, or style, or anything that interests me. I played as different professions, testing the water. I noticed very little difference in any of them, besides the profession skills you get at level 4.
3. Rewards. In most games, your motivation to continue playing the game is to complete quests, and get rewarded for the quests. This is true in SWG, but the rewards early on in the game just aren't intriguing enough to keep me playing. For instance, I would like to be a Bounty Hunter and get some armor like that which Bobba Fett wears. This will not happen, at least not early on in the game. As a Jedi, you naturally assume you'll be using a Light Saber.. again, not going to happen early in the game.
4. Environment. In the beginning of the game, you are forced to stay on space stations, or else in tiny ships. Not only is this restricting, but it's also depressing being 'stuck in space.' My advice for the makers is to have you start out on a planet. For instance, if you're human, then start out on a human planet. If you're a wookie, then start out on Kashyyyk. If you're Ithorian, start out on the Ithorian home planet. Not only would it add a little more substance to the game, it would call for new quests, new environments, and it definitely wouldn't be as boring. Then you can work your way up to space, investing in a ship, or grouping with someone who already has a ship.
5. Graphics/Sounds/Misc. The graphics in some areas are great, but in others are horrible. The sound is good. The little qoutes from the movies that they display during loading screens are incredibly annoying and uncalled for. I can't count how many times I've read "Why, you scruffy looking nerf herder.." or whatever. If they want to improve on this game, they definitely need to get rid of the qoutes.
There's a lot more problems I picked up in this game, but it's just not worth it to mention them all. Those are the main 5 that I felt were worth mentioning.
The good things about this game... umm, I like to kill monsters. But the glitches and boring story just don't make it worth the trouble of signing in and selecting a character and talking to NPCs to get quests, PLUS you have to pay 15 bucks a month for this.
Maybe I'll just go play some CS: Source for a while, hell, it's free.
