Used to be a respectable MMO, now it's known as one of the greatest MMO blunders in history.
Gameplay in the NGE changed the turn-based combat and unique profession system of the previous two combat systems into an FPS. Thirty-two professions that could be switched, redone, and dabbled in were replaced with nine allegedly "iconic" professions. Unfortunately several professions from before the NGE, namely scout and its branch offs and much of the brawler professions, failed to make the cut. Because of the many flaws in the physics of a turn-based game being translated into an entirely different genre, the NGE seems unfinished and beta-state gameplay. Players cannot shoot through walls but NPCs can, lag increasingly affects a players ability to fight effectively, etc.
Graphics are one of the few things still left in a positive note in this game. The worlds, were they not entirely empty with the exception of ghost town, still retain their immersive qualities and the graphics themselves can still give high performance computers a run for their money. However, with the new system, many of the original animations in the game were done away with, giving many professions a cookie cutter look as they fight.
The music and sound effects are still the wonderfully mixed soundtrack of Star Wars and retain their immersive qualities as you hear John Williams music walking through the various NPC cities.
I have played many MMOs, but never one quite like the original Galaxies. I fought tooth and nail to have it brought back in some way, but SOE's stance on no rollbacks or classic servers remains concrete. The uniqueness of the game has been done away with and replaced with a galaxy full of clones, who gave me an almost daily reminder of how fall this game has fallen.
And so the clone trooper raised his rifle and stated, "Sir, its time for you to leave."
Beginning to turn away I replied, "And so it is."
