User Rating: 9.7 | Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic XBOX
There are few RPGs that stand out amongst the console crowd, and I don't mean just the RPG class alone; I mean period. Final Fantasy VII was one, and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic would be a very close second. On XBOX, the RPG is second to none, especially amongst Star Wars buffs. Confidence states that just about every red-blooded American has seen the Star Wars movies at least once, so everyone should be familiar with Darth Vader and the Empire. This game takes place 4000 years before all that. (If I remember correctly.) You take on the role of some nameless character, and your actions determine how the galaxy can come to be (or not). The story is indeed interactive, and the story almost never misses a beat. Gameplay is excellent. Bioware Corp. did an excellent job in the character classes, and the tabletop elements (the game IS based on a d20 RPG system) are woven seamlessly into the game. You can get so much more done, because, as a plus, you don't have the sadistic game master or an idiot player ruining it for all (I throw the dice, myself and I have a low tolerance for idiots). One drawback about the game: What happens if a 1 is rolled? Nothing big? Typically a "fumble" occurs... Moving around in the very expansive enviroments is well executed, and the world travel is well-done. Combat is well thought out, and unlike tabletop games, the combat is not drawn out. Game time is certainly nothing to sneeze at, either. With close to sixty hours of gameplay on one character alone, and such a high replay value, a player will certainly have sonething to keep them busy. Graphics also get high marks. With such expansive enviroments, and with being able to see so far down the horizon, it's a wonder how the game can get by without a single artifact. Combine that with the level of detail maintained throughout the game, and the graphics engine is gold! Sound also deserves high marks. Even though we've all heard the musical fanfare and lightsaber battles associated with Star Wars, the sond is well executed. The voice-acting is also well thought out, and the characters are able to draw you in, just by their interactions with each other. Value deserves high marks. For an average-priced XBOX game, you certainly are getting more bang for your buck. Star Wars fans and RPG players will certainly not be disappointed. All in all, Star Wars KOTOR is not the average game. If you do not already have this superb title, and if you have an itch to kill some time, this title will be well worth your consideration. Even the average player will find the game engrossing. Wou will not be disappointed. (And, don't worry. There is no Jar Jar Binks to make you wish you were dead.)
