It's an okay game with average gameplay, but the game is just too short.
While this game wasn't horrible, it could have been so much better. There are a few issues with it that I didn't like. For instance, there aren't enough enemies. You face maybe around three to four enemies at once. It doesn't feel like the Empire is guarding their facilities effectively. On the subject of enemies, there isn't enough variety. You face maybe three or four kinds of Stormtroopers, some droids, those forest aliens, and a few big enemies. That's it. For an action game, that's not that many. The last level was boring. You just run down one of the tubes for the Death Star's laser. That's it. There's only a few enemies in it. Shouldn't the Death Star be full of soldiers? Where are all of them? Taking a coffee break?
The snipers in this game are cheap. A lot of times they're up in areas that you can't kill them. I even tried Force Gripping objects at them... Nope. They never hit them, even when they should. The sniper's rifles knock you back and stun you for a few milliseconds. This isn't so bad, except when you're running on a bridge. In one part of the Kashyyyk level later in the game, that's what you're doing. You're encountering enemies on a network of glass bridges. And there's snipers. NEVER jump during this level. The sniper will hit you in midair and you'll fall to your death every time. This annoys me because you can't kill these guys, but they can kill you. Easily. It would be different if I could kill them.
Another gameplay aspect to note are controls. Jumping is horrible. Jumping is broken in this game. You jump high and then drop so fast that it's hard to gauge where you're going to land. It's like every planet in the Star Wars universe has roughly double the gravity of Earth. It's ridiculous. Jumping is so awkward in this game that any platforming in it is nearly impossible--especially in the Hoth campaign. The dash ability is also awkward. You just dash in one specific direction. During the duration of the dash, you can't do anything else. Why? Sometimes it's hard to control the direction that you're going to dash too. The dash is only really useful while in the air.
Aside from the gameplay, the story was interesting. The story was what kept me playing because I wanted to know what was going on with Starkiller. Was he a good guy? A bad guy? Yeah, you can make certain decisions during the game that change the story a bit, but I wasn't sure if Starkiller himself would change too. I still haven't played through the dark side yet. I'm interested in seeing the differences, which wouldn't be that much of an issue because the game is only a few hours long. The game is way too short.
The Good
The story is interesting.
The game moves quickly from one objective to the next.
The game does make you feel like you're unstoppable.
The Bad
The game is way too short.
The controls are awkward and some aspects of them are broken.
Badly ported by Aspyr.
Scoring
Fun Factor: 6/10
When I don't have to platform or face snipers on bridges, I have a lot of fun on this game. The advantage of the low enemy count allows me to go crazy with combos and Force Lightning. That was pretty fun, but it gets a little lonely in the last level.
Story: 8/10
I thought that the story in this game was pretty interesting. I enjoyed noticing the various links in the game to the movies. It's also interesting to note that the light side part of the game is all canon. It was interesting, but it left me wanting more. I felt like I had just watched half the story. This game was probably always intended to have a sequel, but don't hold back on the story because of that.
Gameplay: 4/10
Due to the broken jumping and dashing, I have to give an immediate dock to the score. Otherwise, the game felt amazingly average in this department. The game relies to heavily on Force Lightning and the powers feel rather unimaginative.
Sound: 7/10
This category is hard for me to review. In terms of trying to sound like Star Wars, it does. All the familiar sound effects are there and the music sounds like it's from the movies. On the other hand, I've played a lot of Star Wars games prior to this. It all feels the same from any other game. At the same time, the sound and music didn't suck nor sound average. The music cued nicely and matched the events transpiring in the scenes.
Graphics: 7/10
Most of the graphics look pretty good. There's a few things that bring down the score, though. The models for most droids and artificial objects--even clothes--look great. The models for the people and anything organic, though, look pretty dated. That too perfect skin doesn't go over well with today's graphics.
Final Verdict: 6.5/10
While the story, sound, and graphics are pretty good, the game is tarnished with bad porting and worse controls. That said, if your computer is powerful enough to handle the slowdown and you're patient enough to handle the controls, you'll still have a pleasant time. It's not the best Star Wars game, but it's still worth the play, if only for the story. But since this game is so short, I'd recommend renting a console version.
