This game was pretty revolutionary when it came out. It was the first space-combat game I ever saw that used polygons instead of sprites, long before we had any 3d accelerators and texture-painted polygons. It case you in the role of a Rebel Alliance pilot, and you earned rank, medals, and various other decorations as you progressed through the game. Everything was at your own pace, as you could choose to either do simulated training missions, or work on one of the campaigns. The expansion pack added the B-wing fighter, and a couple more campaigns. The interface for the game brought some new aspects to the genre, such as more involved energy allocation, including the ability to set the configuration of your shields (front, back, or balanced), divert power from your shields to weapons, or engines to shields, and so on. Excellent joystick responsiveness (i always used a CH Products Flightstick). This game occupied an immense amount of my time, for quite a while. It's sequel, TIE Fighter, and another game, Privateer are perhaps the only classic PC space-combat games I consider worthy of preservation in the archives (sorry, plain ol' Wing Commander was boring in comparison to these other games).
