Star Wars on the Sega Master System is primarily a 2D action-platformer that features other gameplay style segments. It follows the basic storyline of Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope from Tatooine to the Death Star. To cut to the chase the overall gameplay is fun, not outstanding...but also not any flaws so glaring that they kill all joy. The best part of the game is, admittedly, just the nostalgia factor. You have the ability to play as Luke, Han, or Leia (given you find them), and get different 8-bit Star Wars themes depending on who you are playing. I really loved these hearing these tunes as I blasted my way through stormtroopers and found myself humming them even after playing. There are sections where you shoot TIE fighters from the Millennium Falcon (having 3D space shooter style gameplay), and you end with the infamous trench run, which is more of a 2D vertical shooter style. The variety of gameplay really makes it feel like more of an epic adventure, similar to the movie. The downsides of the game can be the lack of direction, which can lead to you missing some key elements (like finding Old Ben and getting your lightsaber). The game can be difficult (depending partially on how many items you have found) or frustrating (some of the jumps and the trench run can cause you to throw your controller). All that being said, it is still a must play for any Star Wars fan. For everybody else, it isn't bad, but there are some other excellent platformers on the Sega Master System (like Land of Illusion or Asterix) that may be worth checking out first.
