The greatest real-time strategy game of all time...can't wait for that sequel.

User Rating: 9.5 | Starcraft PC
Starcraft is without a doubt the most important real-time strategy game of all time. Its impact is still felt today, as it has spawned a massively popular gaming culture in South Korea and dominated the U.S. PC games sales charts for a decade. This game is worth every plaudit and award that has been given to it, and probably a few more that should be invented just for the boys at Blizzard. Amazingly, they STILL haven't made a bad game.

Rather than go through the usual categories, let me simply say that Starcraft is a masterpiece in almost every aspect. While its graphics and sound are now heavily dated in 2009, they are still quite well-done. Not a true 3-D game, Starcraft nonetheless possesses a distinct art style that means it's no eyesore even after 10 years. Its gameplay is stellar, perfectly balanced and exquisite in multiplayer. The campaign is truly amazing, telling the absorbing tale of an entirely original sci-fi universe. In fact, countless games have since shamelessly borrowed many of the conventions that saw their apotheosis in this game.

In retrospect, one of the laughable things is that I was hesitant to pay $50 for this game when it first came out. At that time, I still didn't think video games should ever be worth that much. Well, after logging (literally) thousands of hours in the Starcraft universe, I have to acknowledge that in its cost-to-entertainment ratio, this is the best purchase I've ever made in my life.

If you haven't played Starcraft, go get it. The Battle Chest's only $20 or so, and it's the best bang for the buck out there.
