Well, feel like playing an easy game? Hah! Didn't think so!
Is it good? Yes.
Does it have an interesting story? Your average 'Rescue the damsel in distress' routine.
But...be warned, any enjoyment you might receive from this game is when you put your controller in exultation when you finally, truly beat it, and the satisfaction you don't have to play this game again. Or want to for that matter.
This game is often thrown in with more famous names like, Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden, Double Dragon, Contra, Battletoads. Yes, they are all 2D side scrollers, but they are also known as some of the hardest games of all time!
And Super Ghouls and Ghosts does justice to the series to it's reputation as a painful game. Believe it or not, the game does not suck. It's got decent graphics, well done levels, and interesting bosses. Audio is well done as well.
But this is STILL not done for the faint at heart. It is THE most challenging game I've ever played.
I'm not a top tier gamer, I've played games for a long time. So take it by my meaning when I say, it took me three days just to beat the first level on easy settings.
A combination of unfair surprises, impossible jumps, small margin for error (if you get hit twice, you're dead), and tough enemies make this game an extremely challenging one.
However, you did get the ability to upgrade your armor and weapons to make things a bit easier on you. If you get that far...
By the way, did I mention that even IF you manage to make it to the end of this game, guess what? Your damsel in distress says you must bring back a necklace to her? Where is the necklace? AT THE START OF THE GAME! That means you have to play through it again, this time with even harder enemies.
I did the playthrough once. I didn't bother to try to play it again with bringing the necklace. I might someday, but not in the near future.
If you want a true challenge, then THIS is for you. It doesn't matter how well of a gamer you are, this game is a matter of trial and error, and just plain luck.
8.5 out 10. It would've been nice not to been thrown to the wolves from Level 1, and the fact that you have to start all over again bringing the necklace is a bunch of crap! Curse you Super Ghouls N Ghosts! :)
