The perfect 3D platformer that paved the way for all others to come
User Rating: 10 | Super Mario 64 N64
Super Mario 64 was the first Mario game set in a 3D universe. Although it follows the same story-line as its predecessors (princess gets kidnapped, you have to save her) this game definitely stands out from the rest. The creators have taken worlds similar to the 2D ones that players loved, rotated and expanded them adding specific objectives to each one. These different areas are hidden throughout the Princess's castle inside paintings that depict the theme of that particular area. Themes vary from mountainous to volcanic, underwater to floating in the sky. If I can remember correctly, there were 10 objectives for each area varying from races, just plain finding the star and even building a snowman. Although many objectives and the style of the game may seem childish it often provides a level of difficulty and precision that some younger players may not be aware of.
Overall, I loved this game. So much so that I can even pick up my Nintendo 64 today to play it and still have a great time. Developers also had the same great impression of this game that I had since it was the basis for the modern platformer. Every gamer should play the original Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64 if they want to not only to see where many games been influenced by but also for a just plain fun gaming experience.
