Mario is about the only thing that makes this a mario game.

All you do is run around looking for stars that are hidden all throughout paintings in peach's castle, there's very little action compared to the previous and future games and you only get to play as mario, all his powerups are gone replaced by caps that allow temporary affects like the stars in other mario games. Finding enough stars to progress can take an eternity and the flash wears off rather quickly and left me wanting more, and every level is just more of the same look for all six stars, go to next level do the same thing. While the environments are rather pretty, the beauty wears off as it can take hours and hours to find all the stars in a level. The worst thing about the game are the Koopa fights, he's crazy easy and will only take a few tries at most, unlike the nes/snes fights which took a lot more skill to pass. All in all the game looks good but the gameplay just isn't there, Mario 64 could have been great if they had focused on more than just making it look good.
