Super Mario 64 is an adventure style game with several different lands to go to. You start the game with Peach sending a letter to Mario saying that she has baked a cake for him at the castle and she wants him to come and get it. The Lakitu Bros are taping Mario's exciting adventure throughout the whole thing. Bowser has apparently trapped the Toad's and Peach inside the castle walls(?) and you need to rescue them with the castles Power Stars. There are a few secret one's Bowser has missed, however.

You have to jump into paintings inside of rooms to travel into the land shown in the painting. Here you'll uncover a certain amount of Power Stars. There are 120 in all. Every time you get a certain amount, you will unlock certain doors, and you will fight Bowser 3 times throughout the story.

There are 3 hidden switches throughout the game: the invisibility switch(blue), the metal switch(green), and the flying switch(red). When you hit these switch's you will either become invisible and be able to walk through enemies and through cage type of walls, become metal and hurt any enemy you touch as well as sink to the bottom of the water, and also with the red switch, when you do a triple jump, you will take off and fly.

This is a true classic game, one of the best N64 games ever made, along with Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Goldeneye: 007. There is also a Ds version of this game where you can play as Yoshi, Luigi, and Wario. Other games that are kind of sequels to this are Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy. These games show basically the same Star/Shinesprite formula.
