S.M.B.2 took away the revolutionary formulae and introduced a whole new one that is even weirder.
You are once again Mario, rescueing the princess which belive or not isn't peach who was kidnapped and it wasn't by Bowser. Daisy was taken hostage and I don't know the name of the guy who did it. Troughout the game, you face some rather awquird platform tasks, such as doing a long distance jump which is possible if you selected the right character.
Each character has different stats, Mario is sort of All around and Peach can fly long distances. Some people can jump higher than others and some can run faster.
But this game introduced some frustration. You can pick up almost anything, but sometimes there are many enemies and gaps in the terrain it is hard not to avoid both. There is also the invention of the POW block which immobolizes everything on - screen but when its around there usaly arn't many enemies.
On some levels, you have to pick up keys in which you have to jump down a vase. yes a vase, no pipes but vases. You then encounter two mysterious masks. When you hold the key they chase after you and when you drop it they stop. This is rather a daunting task but its adds some stragety into the mix.
You pick up many vegetables, instead of jumping on blocks, he is now picking weeds. Sometimes you may find extras such as a door that goes to a parralel universe which is pointless and a stopwacth which can help.
The game graphicly doesen't look as good, I mean there are more detailed characters and enemies but the scenery looks rather ugly, fuzzy and at sometimes even distorted. It realy doesen't blend into the mix very well.
Neither does the music tough, There is realy no charming world famous trademark mario music, it has this strange soft soundtrack to it with a fast tempoed music for boss fights.
While there isn't much to the game, there is something there and boss fights can be good fun and challenging but for the rest, it is not the same jump 'n run Mario charm, it introduced something new that somewat succeded but became very infamous very fast. There is a game here and a decent one but it may have him on the cover, this is not a Mario game.
