User Rating: 10 | Super Mario Bros. 3 NES
Back in the old days of gaming when Atari was on top of the gaming world, games were basic in nature and fun to play. Then ET for the Atari 2600 came along and the video game world co-lapsed, the masses stopped buying video games and the industry seemed doomed forever. Then in 1983 a Japanese company called Nintendo introduced their new home console the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) along with Super Mario Brothers. All of a sudden games were great again and millions of people parted with their cash for the new home console. Super Mario Brothers in particular offered a game with tight controls, levels filled with secrets and catchy music to add to one of the best gaming experiences in the history of video games. Gaming History was made.

During the NES's career, it flourished with classic titles including Mike Tyson's Punch Out, The Legend of Zelda and Metroid to name a few but Super Mario Brothers 2 in my opinion didn't offer the same gaming experience fans had hoped and expected from the first title. Then in 1988 Nintendo released Super Mario Brothers 3 and again Gaming History was made.

The game doesn't offer much in the story department, only that you need to rescue princess peach from the clutches of evil king Bowser (King Koopa). To do this you must travel through eight different worlds, at the end of each world you must fight one of the Bowser's children and in doing so you will progress.

During each world you will have to run, jump and dodge your way through a variety of enemies including Gomba's, Koopa Troopers, Parana plants, Bullet Bills and many more. To help you, you will have many power up's such as Mushrooms (Which Turn you into Super Mario), Fire Plants (gives you the ability to attack enemies with fire balls), The Leaf (Turns Mario into a Raccoon so he can fly for short periods of time) and many more.

Now, way this game comes into it's own is firstly the level designs, which are some of the best in 2d platforming that you will find in any game. Although some of the levels can be hard (Ice World) but it's not impossible, so it keeps you moving along at a very nice pace. Second, the tight controls are perfectly implemented so if you die, you always know it was your own fault.

The Graphics are probably the best you will find on the NES, The game pushes the hardware to the limit and are very colourful and fit the game perfectly.

The Sound has legendary composer Koji Kondo returning and the music is also some of the best you will find on the NES, catchy, upbeat original Mario (it doesn't get much better)

But the greatest aspect of Super Mario Brothers 3 is the gameplay, even after 20 years anyone can pick it up either from the virtual console of from another source and enjoy what can only be described as a masterpiece. Buy it, play it and enjoy it. But as I said before if you haven't played it you don't deserve to call yourself a gamer. Hail to the King Mario Baby
