Super Mario Galaxy Review
SMG takes place aboard a starship run by a new character to the Mario series, Rosalina. The game begins with the standard Mario series plot, Princess Peach is kidnapped by Bowser etc… Fortunately, even this beginning sequence is presented in a fantastic way and quickly introduces you to the game's new currency of star bits, as well as the familiarizing the gamer with the smooth controls as you move Mario about the world.
Going forward the gameplay consists of collecting stars in order to power your "Starship" in order to travel to the depths of the galaxy to save Princess Peach.
The journey along the way is unforgettable. Getting stars is so much more than simply traveling from point A to point B. Some stars will require you to collect silver pieces, race throughout the world, or fight a boss just to name of few of your various challenges. Additionally, the gamer will encounter a variety of powers that allow Mario to temporarily perform additional functions, such as shoot fireballs or walk on ice. These powers are perfectly placed throughout the game and keep the gameplay fresh while not losing their initial appeal. Additionally, SMG forces the user to creatively use these powers to get past obstacles and uncover hidden areas, pushing the gamer to think beyond the obvious uses of such abilities.
The environments that the gamer are exposed to are also nothing short of mind blowing. Mario will float on dandelions across grassy plains, skate across ice worlds, and run up fiery mountains to name but a few. The unique gravity effects of the game are also incredible and will keep the gamer entertained for hours as you both enjoy the ability to traverse all sides of some planets, and succumb to the deadly changes in gravity of others.
The musical score of SMG is absolutely superb. This game features quite possibly the best Super Mario Galaxy series soundtrack of all time. Not only are there a plethora of newer orchestrated compositions, but also some throwback renditions that will bring nostalgia to long time Mario fans.
From the environment, to the superb soundtrack, to the outstanding gameplay, Super Mario Galaxy is a title that needs to be in any Wii owner's collection.
