The best original Game Boy game.
The gameplay at the time was great, just like any Super Mario game you'd find on the NES. The thing that was great about this game, was the distinction of all of the levels. There were cool obstacles, and gameplay options in each world. I must say the space level was my favorite. You have to love the space monkey boss!
While that doesn't sound like it would make a great game, somehow it did. Basically it was like having Super Mario 3 (one of the best NES games) in your pocket. You had more of a selection of powers, a spin attack, and cool distinct bosses. The last of which first introduces Wario. I actually don't think I ever beat Wario. I always got to his 3rd stage, but he always killed me.
The sound was a little dissapointing. It didn't have the same Super Mario soundtrack we were used to. It actually kind of reminded me of the Super Mario 2 soundtrack, which by all means wasn't good.
The graphics were on par with any NES game out there, except with less color of course. Like I mentioned with the gameplay, each level was unique, and this came with it's look too. The game deffinately took advantage of every little piece of hardware the gameboy had to offer at the time.
All in all I give Super Mario Land 2 a 9.5 out of 10.
I don't know how many batteries I fed my Gameboy just to play this game. While the game was kind of short, it still had alot to offer. And most importantly it kept true to the Super Mario name in both look and gameplay. If only the sound wouldn't have reminded me of the worst Super Mario (Super Mario 2) It may have gotten a 10.
Hand me this game and a gameboy today, and i'd still enjoy playing it.
