A Competitor for RPGers Hearts

User Rating: 9.2 | Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars SNES
It took years of hindsight and nostalgia for this gamer to pick up the controller for another round of Super Mario RPG, years after first completing it and defeating the nefarious Smithy. It was only then that it became readily apparent what a highly underrated and visually impressive (for its time) RPG this truly is. Don't let the Mario licensing fool you, the production and development teams took their time on this one.

The story centers around, of course, Mario, this time accompanied by a slew of his friends (and even enemies) in a fight to restore balance to the Mushroom Kingdom after a band of evil swords descends from the sky. Mallow the marshmallow, Geno the wizard, even Bowser join forces in what is a deceptively complex, deep, enjoyably addicting experience for gamers of all ages.

The amount of rare items and collect-everything side quests in this game put it in a field to compete with the untouchable Final Fantasy franchise, even if it has the cartoony plumber's hat written all over it. Even the story, which one would expect to be a bit of a joke given the stars, is compelling enough to drive the player to see it through until the end. That there is a casino only makes it better.
