The animation is fluid, controls are responsive, level layouts are thoughtful and representative of their "area", sound is appropriate and lively without being repetitive or annoying, and there are enough power-ups and secrets to keep anyone busy and entertained well after completing the game the first time through. The addition of Yoshi was welcome, adding another character and element to the game (though everyone missed Raccoon Mario and the Tanooki suit). Graphics and sound are representative of the period in which the game was developed.
The only drawback is the relative shortness of the game compared to the NES Mario games 2 and 3. However, the game makes up for its reduced length with quality visuals and unique powerups. This is a must-have for anyone that enjoys a side-scrolling platformer.
