Its been over thirteen years since Super Metroid first came out on the Super Nintendo and its finally arrived on the virtual console for download. So how does it hold up over thirteen years? Super Metroid is just as fun and addictive as ever and is still a solid experience. If you've missed out you can download Super Metroid for only 800 Wii points ($8) which is well worth it. Super Metroid revolves around bounty hunter Samus Aran who must retrieve the stolen Metroid larva and restore peace to the galaxy. In her efforts to do so she will face many dangers as she explores the depths of planet Zebes. Along the way she will also find many power ups that will help her in her battles against the space pirates and further explore areas that were previously inaccessible, much like in the Castlevania series. These power ups give Samus amazing abilities like the morph ball which allows Samus to curl up into a ball and navigate through small passages, and the space jump which allows for continuous jumping. The power ups Samus finds can be combined together in different varieties adding alot of depth to the game play, although the game automatically combines them to the most proficient combination as you collect them, you can still turn them on and off and combine them as you like for different effects, some advanced techniques can only be done this way so experimenting has its benefits. Samus will explore many exotic places in her adventure like the vibrant jungle of Brinstar and the fiery depths of Norfair, where she'll encounter many different enemies and bosses. Most of the enemies and bosses are well designed like the boss of Brinstar, Kraid a huge Godzilla like alien that shots spikes from its stomach. Each enemy has there own strengths and weakness and its up to the player to find out their weakness and exploit them.
The soundtrack fits each level nicely giving each area more personality and making them feel more mysterious and creepy.Theres a lot of exploring to do and many cool power ups at your disposal, in the end Super Metroid is alot of fun and will always be one of the best 2D action/adventure platformers ever created.
