My only experiences with original Metroid platformers was with Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission. I can easily see where those games got there greatness after playing this baby. Great level design encourages non-linear exploration. The story is interesting yet simple. Samus gives a youngling Metroid to a research facility. Shortly after she leaves the facility the Metroid wreaks havoc on the space station and gets captured by the Ridley and the space pirates so it's your job to fetch it back. You then land on planet Zebes - the location of the original game - and jump, spin, and morph ball your way to the planet's interior. The areas you'll traverse include the outer crust of Crateria, the cavern-like Brinstar, the hot and dangerous Norfair, and more. Samus has a wide array of weapons to find and use on unlucky baddies. The Super Missle and Spazer beam are especially cool to use. You'll get your weapons early on so it's fun to higher your supply of Missiles and such. You can also update your battle suit with better jump abilities and speedy boots. To save your progress you'll have to find save spots. Trying to find a save spot when your low on health and in a new area gives a fun sense of urgency. The graphics are creme of the crop the 32-bit era and never seem aged. The boss fights are always appealing. Overall Super Metroid is a game you most definitely have to own on the Virtual Console. The game's colorful enemies and bosses are never hard to beat but you might get stuck or lost exploring Zebes' large caves. But don't fret because the game gives you instant feedback for your accomplishments.
