Super Metroid not only revitalizes the sidescrolling genre, but proves that despite the fancy 3D craze, 2D can be better

User Rating: 10 | Super Metroid SNES
Super Metroid had stood the test of time and, despite the reformating and new dimentionality of the gamecube/wii installments, this sidescroller still DOMINATES the later versions.

Why?
1. While the later versions seek a sort of realism in the graphic and sound display, what made the SNES version so great was, in fact, the deep atmospheric and fantasy qualities of the genre which I believe were lost in translation to the 3D. Metroid Prime just doesn't play the same. If Metroid Prime were a great 3D game, it would be called Halo.

2. 3rd person games are more interesting than 1st person shooters, which is what the later installments are. I freely admit that if Metroid Prime were playable from an overhead view, the game would be more fun to play. It's not, so there it is. Being able to have a greater control over Samus in Super Metroid really brings a lot of enjoyment to the game. Super Mario Galaxy did it to great success as it added to its predecessors. Which I could say the same for Metroid Prime
