A perfect mix of more genres, from platform to RPG. Not to be missed!
Came out totally unespected, the game seems a dream became reality, so I (at the time a passionate SNES player) got the cartridge immediately.
Was the game really so wonderful?
I've already played some similar games in SNES (like the great Castlevania 4 or Super Turrican)...
Did Super Metroid should revealed itself the best?
Well, maybe not the best... but the perfect mix of platforming, adventure, shooting and RPG elements was hardly reached again in future.
The game begins immediately after the end of last metroid's episode on 8-bit console.
Samus (what a woman)... totally defeated the metrois except one specimen, left on a scientifical lab for more studies. Soon after her departure from the lab she receive a SOS from it, so she U-turn to the lab only to discover that some unknow enemies attacked it. The mission is to explore the lab, find what is happened and retrieve the last metroid.
The game work principally like a platform-adventure Castlevania style. Samus shall explore a megalitic underground structure killing any possible enemy and searching for every possible power up items. Empowering Samus suit (gaining not only new weapons, but new movement and action possibilities) is an absolutely parts of the game design. The lab is made up of
sub-structures separated by door that can be open shooting them with specific amunition. So the lab was not entirely accessible from the beginning, but the game field enlarged itself with a pace and a cadence practically perfect.
Super Metroid was a game more oriented to the essence than appearance, so the technical realization was under the SNES standards, especially for special effects, musics and sound effects. However there was some really nice and big bosses and the fights with important enemies and last bosses was exciting and well designed.
So, even lacking the charisma of a Castlevania and presenting a technical realization not so rich, but funtional, Super Metroid was and is still today a game experience to undertake.
Recommended without reserve.
