The most atmospheric and intense SNES game ever made
In Super Metroid, which is the third part in the series, we follow Samus Aran on her quest to defeat the Space Pirates, who have rebuild their base on planet Zebes and have stolen the last living Metroid , a strange creature that attaches itself to other organisms , sucking out their life force , getting stronger in the progress .
Metroid games are a league of their own, and can be best described as a shooter-platformer were you search for new abilities that let you enter previous inaccessible areas . The game world is a big labyrinth , with lots of different settings and secrets .
When you start playing the game, you immediately feel the atmosphere that's dripping off this game . Cool things happen constantly while playing the game, and manage to suprise you time after time . To demonstrate this, I must reveal a few SPOILERS : (skip to the next paragraph if you don't want any spoilers)
In the beginning of the game, there are no enemies while running around , it seems as if the planet is empty, but further on you are detected by a scan light , and when going back, the whole area is crowded with enemies . There's also a boss that you don't simply destroy, you push him in the lava and he litterally burns to death ( you even feel sorry for him) . And it has to be said, your face will be filled with anger while destroying the last boss, which never happened before in a shooter game .
It must be said that the greatest thing about this game is the sound . The music and sound effects are among the best ever . Every creature has it's own sound effects and the music greatly adds to the atmosphere . Add the flawless gameplay , very good graphics and a lifespan as long as you like to make it (getting 100% ain't easy) and you have an instant classic .
In the end Super Metroid succeeds where other games fail . It captures you from beginning to end and leaves you with an empty feeling while staring at the end credits .
