I take on Nintendo's genre-busting mascot brawler.
User Rating: 9 | Super Smash Bros. N64
I've been playing this Smash Bros. since its Japanese release -- and I still love the game. But I have to admit that I spent most of the time playing the multiplayer modes. It's not that the one-player mode is bad -- HAL tried to add a bit of variety by offering bonus stages and team fights, but the order of your opponents never changes and you'll find yourself playing just to get the hidden stuff. But plug in a few more controllers and the game comes to life. The character balance may seem a bit unfair at first , but every fighter has his weaknesses and can be defeated. Well, Jigglypuff is a different story... What a worthless character. I sincerely hope Nintendo creates a sequel to this game on its next game console and includes not only the characters from the main game franchises, but also secondary and lesser known ones. As it stands, Smash Bros. is an excellent choice for gamers looking for a worthy multiplayer smash 'em-up. Players looking for a Tekken-killer on N64 will have to wait
Presentation: 12 famous mascot characters and plenty of locations based on famous Nintendo franchises. 8.5/10
Graphics: Nice graphical effects and well-drawn backgrounds. On the other hand, low poly models, some ugly textures and pixelated sprite objects. 8.5/10
Sound: Many of Nintendo's most famous melodies and sound effects return. Points off for NOA's unnecessary sound editing. 8.5/10
Gameplay: Easy to pick up, great controls and simple yet addictive gameplay. Just don't expect a fighting game in the traditional sense. 9.5/10
Lasting Appeal: The one-player mode is the game's biggest weakness, but the multiplayer battles rock. 8.5/10
Overall: 9/10
My Verdict: Buy It :)
