Creative - not really. Fun - most definitely.
Gameplay: Classic side-scrolling action. You get a blaster AND a lightsaber so it doesn't get old. Most levels are intense side-scrolling but there's also several vehicle levels. I don't usually like vehicle sequences in action games but these are actually kind of fun and look pretty good too. Nice mixture of outdoor and indoor levels. You start off as Luke Skywalker but you eventually get to be Hahn Solo and Chewie! There's some very tricky platform jumping sequences that will drive you to drink. You collect little hearts for health as you kill bad guys, and you receive lightsaber bars which increase your overall HP. There's also several different blaster power-ups available (5 to be exact), similar to something like Contra. There's not a lot of strategy involved in the boss battles, but they are rewarding to win. You just bomb away until they fold or you do.
Difficulty: It's certainly not the easiest game to beat. There's no way to save the game so when you run out of lives you have to start over. No getting bailed out by saves or passwords.
Pros: Great variety of characters - you get to be Luke, Chewie, and Hahn Solo. Nice variety of weapons - you get the blaster with several different power-ups, and the heralded lightsaber itself. The graphics are sweet for the SNES, and you get to relive a lot of moments from the movie. The vehicle stages also add a very nice mixture of gameplay. Furthermore the music is straight from the films and that definitely adds to the feeling of nostalgia. It definitely feels like the movie, and many geographic areas you can tell are directly modeled from the film.
Cons: It's just kind of sticky in some areas. Some of the jumping takes a while to get the hang of, and the controls could be more responsive. If you die you have to start over from the beginning. Also the final sequence when you're flying the X-wing is just weird and frustrating.
Overall: While being far from perfect, I like Super Star Wars a lot and would highly recommend it. I can't believe I didn't have this when I was little. 8.5 / 10.
