This average repetitive shooter doesn't stand out neither as an action game nor as a Star Wars game.

It was quite a surprise for me that there were actually 3 Star Wars games on the SNES based on the Original Trilogy. I was quite confused when I stumbled upon those games because the first one was just called Super Star Wars without any subtitle. That's really weird but whatever.
So, Super Star Wars. It is a 2D platformer with shooter elements and short 3D vehicle sections. You can cross out the "originality" criteria right here because SSW does nothing new or revolutionary. It is probably unfair to harp on the game for this. After all, there are many great games that improve upon an already existing formula. Sadly, for SSW this is not the case either.
The game starts out on Tatooine where you will actually spend 8 levels out of 16. You play as Luke blasting away some sand creatures I've never seen in any Star Wars-related products. During the first levels the game seems a half-way decent shooter. However, the third level "Outside the Sandcrawler" is a test of your sanity. It combines absolutely unforgiving and long platforming sequence where enemies and other obstacles take cheapshots at you and send you right back to the ground if you make a slight mistake. And, of course, the platforms are moving (yay!).
That's the main problem with the game. Outside platforming sucks. Sometimes you can't see where you are supposed to jump and end up performing the "leap of faith". Also, the game likes to throw a bunch of shattering platforms, lava and other instant death crap. Finally, when you navigate jumps, the scrolling is sometimes (rarely but at the most important parts) unable to catch up with the character.
On the other hand, inside levels are great. They are fast-paced, fun, relaxing, they don't rely on "faith" platforming. The best one is probably the cantina level, it features a variety of Star Wars creatures and the great Mos Eisley bar music.
The boss battles are a total joke. They are impossibly hard and if your health isn't full, you're most likely screwed. There are no tactics with them. All you can do is jump and constantly shoot away while they take shots you usually can't avoid.
The 3D portions are really generic but not broken so they do not neither spoil nor enhance the experience.
On the positive side... The graphics are nice. Also, Luke gets a lightsaber in the beginning of the game but you don't need to use it. There is a pretty cool slide move.
There are a lot of bad things you can say about SSW. But the score isn't low. Why is that? Simply because halfway through the game I realized I was having fun. If you can get through the frustrating platforming, you will probably enjoy SSW. But then again, you really have to be patient to get trough it.
